Conger Chess Club Hosts Tournament against fellow elementary schools

A friendly chess tournament was put together at Conger Elementary School Friday afternoon, hosted by the school’s chess club. The tournament featured Conger, Pelican, Roosevelt and Mills elementary students.

The event was put together by Conger instructor, Ashley McPherson, and was a Northwest Scholastic Rating System rated chess tournament, with every player receiving a chess rating. Prizes were earned for first, second and third place spots. The competition itself was a rated quad style tournament.

The tournament featured students with various levels of experience. McPherson was accompanied by her father, Klamath Union High School instructor, Marvin Dykstra, mother Kimberly and sister, Ciara.

The family helped regulate the games, kept scores after each victory and answered questions if players were stumped.

If possible, the same type of chess tournament will occur each month. If a student has a high enough rating, they will qualify for a major tournament in Seaside.
