OVERVIEW OF TITLE VI INDIAN EDUCATION

The district is committed to the development of curriculum and to train teachers and Title VI staff to present academic and cultural skills education to Native American students and increase cultural awareness regarding the local Tribes. In addition, Title VI paraprofessionals will be trained to facilitate language arts and mathematics remediation for Native American students in their schools as well as be trained to teach relevant and accurate culture specific to the students' Tribal history.

Purpose:

  • Meet the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of Native Americans so that these students can achieve the same challenging state standards as all students.

  • Assist in connecting families of Native American students with culture, community and education.

  • Address the culturally related academic needs of Native American students.

  • Extend program services to all qualified Native American students.

  • Improve cultural awareness and self esteem among students.

  • Increase the number of Title VI program students successfully completing high school and pursuing higher education.

Student Eligibility:

  • The student must be enrolled in school in the Klamath Falls City Schools.

  • Either the student or a biological parent or grandparent must be or must have been enrolled or recognized by an Indian tribe, group or band.

  • The parent or guardian of the student needs to complete a Federal “506” Form indicating the student's heritage. Please print FORM 506, complete (one for each student) and drop by or mail to: Klamath Falls City Schools, ATTN: Christine Redford, 1336 Avalon Street, Klamath Falls, Oregon 97603.
